At EYE Marine, Graham has recently manufactured a custom precision mooring bridle for heavy-duty marine use. Made from 32 mm eight-strand poly steel rope, the bridle has been carefully spliced and finished in the workshop to provide strength, balance and dependable performance for demanding mooring or towing applications.
This particular assembly includes a 25 mm ring, US Federal thimbles, soft eyes and protective wear sleeves. Versions can also be made in different rope diameters and finished lengths, depending on the customer’s requirements.
The key detail is the accuracy of the finished assembly. Both bridle legs have been made to exactly 4.5 metres so that the load can be shared evenly when the bridle is under tension.
What Is a Precision Mooring Bridle?
A mooring bridle is a rope assembly that allows a boat, barge or other vessel to connect securely to a mooring point. The bridle can be attached to a mooring buoy or ring, with two rope legs leading back to bollards or cleats on the vessel.
Using two legs instead of a single line can improve load distribution and provide additional security. This is especially useful for larger vessels, barges and other heavy-duty applications where strength and balance matter. Given the rope diameter and fittings used here, this specification is more suited to a barge or similar commercial vessel than a typical yacht.

Key Features of the Custom Bridle
32 mm eight-strand poly steel rope
The main rope used for this bridle is 32 mm eight-strand poly steel rope. Poly steel rope is widely used in marine, mooring and commercial applications because it combines high strength with practical handling characteristics and durability. Its eight-strand construction is also suitable for professional splicing, allowing strong terminations without relying on bulky knots.
US Federal thimbles
The bridle has been made with US Federal thimbles, which help protect the rope eye and maintain the shape of the connection point. In this assembly, the thimbles are spliced into the bridle and connected through a 25 mm ring.
25 mm ring
A 25 mm ring forms the central connection point, providing a strong attachment location where the bridle can be connected to a mooring buoy or suitable marine fixing.
Soft eyes
The bridle legs terminate in soft eyes, allowing them to be passed over bollards or cleats on the vessel. Soft eyes are practical for mooring because they are easy to handle and can be protected with additional wear sleeves where contact and abrasion are expected.
Wear sleeves for abrasion protection
The soft eye ends include wear sleeves to help protect the rope where it may pass over the edge of the bow or contact bollards, cleats and other hard surfaces. Repeated movement, tension and contact can cause abrasion over time, so adding protection at key points can help improve the working life of the assembly.
Why Equal Bridle Lengths Matter
One of the most important details in this project is that both legs of the bridle are exactly the same length. Each leg has been made to 4.5 metres.
Uneven bridle legs can create unbalanced loading. The shorter leg may take more strain, or the vessel may sit or tow unevenly. For mooring, equal lengths help distribute the load between the two bollards or cleats. For towing, they help the object being towed follow centrally behind the towing vessel.
This is where experienced rope work and accurate splicing make a practical difference. A precision bridle is not simply a length of rope with fittings attached. It must be measured, spliced and finished correctly so that it performs as intended when placed under load.
Built for Heavy-Duty Mooring and Towing Applications
The specification of this custom bridle makes it suitable for applications such as:
- Barge mooring
- Heavy-duty boat mooring
- Mooring buoy connections
- Twin bollard or twin cleat setups
- Balanced towing applications
- Commercial marine rope assemblies
The combination of 32 mm poly steel rope, spliced terminations, US Federal thimbles, a 25 mm ring and wear sleeves provides the strength and practical protection required for demanding marine environments. The final specification should always be selected according to the vessel, expected loads and working conditions.
Workshop-Made at EYE Marine
This bridle was made in the EYE Marine workshop by Graham, with careful attention given to the exact finished lengths of both legs. The work included measuring both legs to exactly 4.5 metres, splicing the rope ends, fitting the thimbles, installing the central ring, creating the soft eyes and adding wear sleeves for abrasion protection.
Some slight creasing may be visible around tightly worked splice areas before the bridle has been loaded. This is expected with this type of assembly. Once weight and tension are applied, the rope settles into its working shape.
Suitable for Custom Marine Rope Requirements
Every vessel and mooring setup is different. The correct rope diameter, bridle length, hardware and protection points depend on the application, vessel size, expected loads and environment.
This example was made using 32 mm rope, with other rope diameters and custom finished lengths available to suit the application. If a bridle is being used for mooring or towing, it is important that the final specification is suitable for the intended load and working conditions.
