Zinc Shaft Anodes for Marine Propeller Shafts

Zinc shaft anodes are a critical component in protecting a vessel’s underwater metal components from galvanic corrosion. Installed directly onto the propeller shaft, these sacrificial anodes slowly corrode in place of more valuable metal parts such as the propeller, shaft, stern gear, and other underwater fittings.

Each anode is manufactured from high-grade marine zinc and designed to clamp securely around the propeller shaft using stainless steel bolts. The two-piece design allows installation without removing the shaft, making routine maintenance straightforward during lift-outs or servicing.

Product Description

In saltwater environments, electrochemical reactions occur naturally between dissimilar metals. Without protection, this process can quickly damage propellers, shafts, and other essential drivetrain components. A zinc shaft anode acts as the sacrificial metal in this process, attracting the corrosive electrical activity and preventing damage to the boat’s more expensive metal components.

Regular inspection and replacement of shaft anodes is essential to maintain effective corrosion protection. As the zinc material gradually erodes, it should be replaced before it becomes excessively depleted. Correct sizing for the shaft diameter is important to ensure a secure fit and proper electrical contact.

Zinc shaft anodes are primarily used on vessels operating in saltwater and are commonly fitted to yachts, motor cruisers, commercial vessels, workboats, and fishing boats.
